TRAYYANTA
Artistes of the Sankhya dance company, from Mumbai, performed Trayyanta, a dance drama based on the ethos and philosophy of the Upanishads. Vaibhav Arekar the choreographer and lead dancer presented a show that was aesthetically pleasing to the senses. Dance traces its roots to the Vedas and based on this subtle knowledge, the show was designed to stir the minds of the seeker, to culminate in the question – ‘Who am I?’ Vaibhav Arekar pointed to Trayyanta as the confluence of the seeker, sought and the path. The performance opened with the viratpurusha, which made artistes and audience think of the abstraction of the cosmos and its creator. In keeping with the pensiveness of the theme, Vaibhav appropriately left it to the audience to take away what they wished. He neatly summed it up with, “Whatever you catch is yours!” The evening was made more special by the presence of Swami Swaroopananda, the Global Head of Chinmaya Mission in our midst. Swamiji shared his thoughts on the depths and subtleties of Indian classical forms, which according to Pujya Gurudev, are meant to make us meditate. We are distracted by sound but when that sound is in a certain rhythm it fascinates the mind. Good musicians draw the attention to the pauses between two notes. Alluding to dance, he said that the dancer makes moves in space, which lead us from form to the formless. When classical performances are viewed with this attitude, we are transported to a meditative state, to indescribable bliss! At the conclusion of the programme, Swami Swaroopananda commended the performance and presented mementos to each artiste.
